Font license

Effective: September 2026.

This agreement covers how you may use any MagicType font. “Font Software” means the font files and any accompanying material. “Licensee” means whoever downloaded the Font Software. “Licensor” means MagicType.

Open-source fonts

Fonts published under the SIL Open Font License (via magictype.in, GitHub, or Google Fonts) are governed entirely by that license, not by the tiers below. Free to use, including commercially. Crediting MagicType is appreciated, not required.

Free Tier

Fonts marked “Free” on magictype.in are licensed for personal, non-commercial use only.

Permitted: personal, non-commercial use — personal projects, learning, hobby and non-profit work; installing and using it on any number of your own personal devices.

Not permitted: any commercial use of any kind, including client work, branding, merchandise, or monetized content; redistributing, reselling, or re-uploading the font file anywhere; modifying and redistributing it as a derivative font; embedding it in any product or software distributed to others.

Free Tier fonts are provided with no warranty and no support obligation. Fonts downloaded before this agreement’s effective date remain governed by the terms shown at the time of download.

Paid Tier — Desktop License

The standard license included with every paid desktop purchase, unless a different license is stated on the product page.

Who it covers: one individual, or one company/organization. If purchased by a company, it covers that company’s own employees and direct contractors working on its behalf — not other companies or freelancers on their own separate projects.

Where it applies: installation on any number of computers owned or controlled by the licensed individual or company. No seat limit — your whole team is covered as long as everyone works for the one licensed company.

What it’s for: use in design software for print, packaging, branding, signage, video, and static digital output (PDFs, images, social graphics, presentations). End products made with the font — posters, logos, packaging, book covers, merchandise, and so on — may be sold or distributed without limit; this license restricts only the font file itself, never what you create with it.

What it does not cover: live web use via @font-face/CSS embedding (see the Web License below), or embedding inside an app, game, or piece of distributed software (App License — email [email protected] for a quote).

Not permitted under any paid license: reselling, sublicensing, or redistributing the raw font file to any third party; uploading it to a public repository, font-sharing site, or marketplace; claiming authorship of the typeface; modifying and redistributing it as a new or derivative typeface without MagicType’s written permission.

Paid Tier — Web License

A separate license for self-hosting MagicType web font files (WOFF/WOFF2) via @font-face on your own website.

Who it covers: one individual, or one company/organization — same scope as the Desktop License.

Where it applies: one website (one domain, including its subdomains) per Web License purchased. No page-view or visitor limit. Need more than one website? Purchase an additional Web License, or contact [email protected] for a multi-domain rate.

What it does not cover: embedding inside an app, game, or piece of distributed software — that needs a separate App License.

Not permitted: allowing site visitors to download, extract, or otherwise obtain the underlying font files beyond normal web delivery; reselling, redistributing, or re-uploading these files to any third party; claiming authorship of the typeface; modifying and redistributing it as a new or derivative typeface without MagicType’s written permission.

Extended use (large-scale merchandise, broadcast/film title use, app/software embedding, or licensing on behalf of multiple unrelated clients) requires an Extended License — email [email protected].

Paid Tier — Desktop + Web Bundle

Combines the Desktop License and Web License above under a single purchase, for the same individual or company.

Where it applies: any number of computers owned or controlled by the licensee, plus one website (one domain, including its subdomains). Additional websites still need a separate Web License.

Not permitted: the same restrictions listed under the Desktop License and Web License above apply in full.

Ownership, termination, warranty

The Font Software is licensed, not sold — MagicType retains all copyright and intellectual property rights. This license ends automatically if the Licensee breaches any term above, at which point all copies of the Font Software must be deleted. The Font Software is provided “as is,” without warranty of any kind, express or implied.
